Bio
Dr. de SA is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgeon from Hamilton, Ontario whose clinical scope includes adult and paediatric sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery, and musculoskeletal trauma. He has a special clinical and research interest in complex knee reconstruction. Dr. de SA also serves as the Director of the Surgical Foundations Program within the Department of Surgery at McMaster University.
He completed both his medical and orthopaedic surgical residency training at McMaster University. He completed a Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery Fellowship under the mentorship of Drs. Freddie H. Fu and Volker Musahl at the University of Pittsburgh. In this latter role, he acquired extensive experience as Assistant Team Physician for the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL) and worked collaboratively with the medical teams for the Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL) and the University of Pittsburgh collegiate athletics. He is currently the Associate Head Orthopaedic Surgeon for the Hamilton Forge FC (Canadian Premier League), and an Assistant Team Physician with the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Moreover, Dr. de SA has completed additional Fellowship training in adolescent and paediatric trauma (Western University) and adult musculoskeletal trauma (McMaster University).
Dr. de SA has contributed to a productive research program focused on outcomes research in adult/paediatric trauma and athletic injuries/non-arthritic conditions of the knee, shoulder and hip. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed manuscripts, numerous book chapters, and has delivered several podium and poster presentations on the national and international stage. Most recently, he served as Assistant Editor for the joint JISAKOS/ESSKA "Basic Methods Handbook for Clinical Orthopaedic Research: A Practical Guide and Case-Based Research Approach", and serves on the Editorial Boards for KSSTA and Arthroscopy. Dr. de SA has a passion for medical education as well, and has been recognized at the institutional and national level for his contributions in this realm. He remains an active member of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopaedic Sport Medicine, International Quadriceps Tendon Interest Group, and the Arthroscopy Association of Canada.
