MacOrtho Special Guest Lecture

This invited speaker is selectively chosen from across a variety of disciplines to educate our orthopaedic community based on the focus of our annual academic day.



R. Douglas Orr (2014)

Dr. R. Douglas Orr is a staff physician at the Center for Spine Health and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, located on the main campus of the Cleveland Clinic.


Derek Moore (2013)

Dr. Derek Moore is a practicing Orthopedic Surgeon at Southcoast Hosptials Group. Dr. Moore is also the founder and CEO of Lineage Medical.


Reva Joshee (2012)

Dr. Reva Joshee is an associate professor of educational theory and policy at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. Dr. Joshee also acts as the Chair of the Advisory Committee for the Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace.


Beate Hanson (2011)

Dr. Beate Hanson is the Director of Clinical Research and Documentation at the AO Foundation, a medically guided nonprofit organization led specialized in the treatment of trauma and disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Dr. Hanson is also an associate clinical professor in the Department of Health Services at the University of Washington.

Robert F. Martin Lectureship

The Robert F. Martin Lectureship was established in 2011 to honour the former Academic Division Head, Robert Martin (1983-1998). Dr. Martin made significant contributions to the orthopaedic department by recruiting academically qualified subspecialty orthopaedic surgeons to help establish an improved academic and research environment. Invited speakers discuss topics crucial to leadership and education.

Peter Ferguson (2014)

Dr. Peter Ferguson is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in Orthopaedic Oncology at Mount Sinai and Princess Margaret Hospitals. He is currently the Albert and Temmy Latner Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Toronto.


P.J. Devereaux (2013)

Dr. Devereaux is the Head of Cardiology and the Perioperative Cardiovascular Clinical Program at the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre. He is also the Scientific Leader of the Perioperative Medicine and Surgical Research Group at the Population Health Research Institute.


Michael McKee (2012)

Dr. Michael McKee is an adjunct scientist in the Keenan Research Centre of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael’s Hospital as well as a professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He has served twice with the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan as an orthopaedic surgeon.


James Heckman (2011)

Dr. James Heckman is the past Editor-in-Chief of the American volume of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. Currently, Dr. Heckman serves as the Chairman of the Research Grants Committee for the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation.


Robert Lofthouse Memorial Lectureship

The Dr.Robert LofthouseMemorial Lectureship was established in 2011 in memorial of the former Academic Division Head, Robert Lofthouse (1970-1982). Dr. Lofthouse participated in the development of the orthopaedic program and was a positive influence on his community and his family. Invited speakers for this lectureship are encouraged to share their experiences and insights into innovation and pioneering new frontiers.


Diane Kelsall (2014)

Dr. Diane L. Kelsall was appointed Deputy Editor, Clinical of the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) in November 2008. With the launch of CMAJ Open in January 2013, she took on the role of Editor, CMAJ Open. She is also in private practice in Ottawa.


Bruce Browner (2013)

Dr. Bruce Browner is a Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He holds the Harry and Helen Gray and Harry Gossling Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery.


Parminder Raina (2012)

Dr. Parminder Raina is a professor in the Department if Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University. Having published over 150 peer-reviewed papers and reports, as well as having served several provincial, federal and international agencies as an advisor, Dr. Raina is a successful leader in the study of aging.


Victor Neufeld (2011)

Dr. Victor Neufeld is a professor emeritus in the Department if Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University. He has served as a consultant and advisor to many international agencies, organizations and institutions. Currently, he is the National Coordinator of the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research.

MacOrtho Award of Excellence

This premier award of distinction was established to honour, recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of leaders in orthopaedic surgery.


Mark Walton (2014)

Dr. Mark Walton is a Professor in the Department of Surgery and the Assistant Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education for the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.


Jonathan Adachi (2013)

Dr. Jonathan Adachi is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University and Rheumatologist at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton.


Douglas Thomson (2012)

CEO at the Canadian Orthopaedic Association.

MacOrtho Faculty Recognition Award

This recognition award is given annually to a faulty member recognizing excellence in educating, mentorship, research and professional endeavors.

Nigel Colterjohn Teaching Award

This annual teaching award is given to a faculty member, nominated by residents only, who exemplifies the qualities of a great educator. The award is given in honour of the late Dr. Nigel Colterjohn who was an orthopaedic oncologist and arthroplasty surgeon at McMaster University. Dr. Colterjohn will forever be remembered for his contributions to education and patient care.

William L. Orovan Leadership Fund

The "William L. Orovan Leadership Fund" was established in support and acknowledgement of Dr. Orovan’s extraordinary leadership as the Chair of the McMaster University Department of Surgery over the past decade. The goal of this fund is to develop a legacy of surgeon leaders in our field.
