Overview

Welcome from Residency Program Director

It's my pleasure to welcome you to the McMaster University Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery Residency Program. Our residency program started in 2003 and has been evolving ever since. Our mission is to provide excellent training to our residents through clinical and surgical education and research opportunities.

Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Healthcare serves approximately 2.3 million people in Hamilton, central-south and central-west Ontario. The residents therefore acquire exposure to a variable spectrum of common and less common diseases related to our specialty.

The residency training is a five-year program. Two residents are accepted every year. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons is transitioning to a new competency-based approach called Competence by Design (CBD).  Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery is the first surgical program to launch the new CBD curriculum. Our program welcomed the first cohort of CBD residents in July 2017 and our second-year residents made the decision to join them by transitioning to the new CBD curriculum; as well. This decision has been fully supported by our team of clinical educators. During their first two years, residents receive Surgical Foundations training to provide a solid background in the principles of surgery related to Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. All surgical residents starting July 2018 will also be enrolled in the Surgical Foundations program CBD curriculum.
