Hometown: London, Ontario

Undergraduate:
B.MSc., Hons. Sp. Physiology & Hons. Basic Medical Sciences (Dual)

Medical School:
Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, London ON

Why did I choose this specialization?
I chose Vascular Surgery because it is the perfect blend of surgery, medicine, and radiology, all in the context of caring for a diverse patient population. Between the innovative research, medical complexity, and technical skill, it always presents new challenges and learning opportunities. There is never a dull moment!

Why McMaster?
The program at McMaster simply drew me in – with captivating personalities and a constant strive for excellence, it was a natural fit. It also provides a wonderful balance of close mentorship, research support, and operative volume.

Professional Interests:
Truthfully, I am still figuring it out! Clinically speaking, I look forward to being involved with research focused on hybridized imaging to reduce radiation exposure during endovascular cases. In the qualitative realm, I hope to continue research focused on multi-modal reflective exercises to help surgeons cope with complex cases.

Other Interests:
Outside the hospital, my first priority is friends and family (and sleep!). I love to explore the outdoors, to travel, and to indulge at the best restaurants in Hamilton. I also stay involved in the arts; at home, you can often find me with a paintbrush and a glass of red wine!

Dr. Maged Metias

Man

Hometown: Pickering, Ontario

Undergraduate: Mechanical Engineering, University of Toronto

Medical School: University of Toronto

Why did I choose this specialization? I was a piping and pumping engineer initially and vascular surgery was a field of medicine that was the medical parallel to my engineering training and career. Moreover, vascular surgery is unique in that it allows you to preform open and endovascular surgery, exposes you to anatomy all over the body, allows you to independently medically manage your patients, and thus, build long-term relationships with your patients!

Why McMaster? McMaster had great surgical training with high volumes and early surgical exposure. The staff and residents were very encouraging and supportive. The city itself has a lot to offer from its numerous trails, waterfalls and restaurants.

Professional Interests:
Combining engineering and innovation with vascular surgery.

Other Interests: I have a variety of interests from outdoor activities such as travelling, hiking, sailing, and basketball to indoor activities such as home renovation, reading, baking/cooking, and simply hanging out with family and friends.

Dr. Brandon McGuinness

BrandonMcGuinness

Hometown: Maple Ridge, BC

Undergraduate: Pharmacology, University of British Columbia

Medical School: University of Calgary

Why did I choose this specialization? I found vascular surgery to offer a unique combination of technology, acute and elective practice.  Endovascular techniques are constantly changing and improving, keeping the field fresh and exciting.  As a vascular surgeon you are required to have the skillset to perform open operations throughout the body.  It is also rewarding, and you can see first-hand substantial impact on patient’s status and quality of life.

Why McMaster? The McMaster program offers an excellent group of supportive staff.  The program offers early hands on experience and is flexible in structure, allowing you to obtain the most from your residency.

Professional Interests: I find the breadth of vascular surgery to be interesting from open aneurysm repair to peripheral endovascular procedures.  I have an interest in trial design and epidemiologic research in vascular surgery, regarding perioperative outcomes and the development of peripheral vascular disease.

Other Interests: Travelling, basketball, fitness, spending time with family and friends.
