The ABC’s of Academics, Brilliant Fellows and New Collaborations (With a Touch of Wine, Poutine and Maid of the Mist AKA the Hornblower!)

The historical visit of the American-British-Canadian Travelling Fellows to McMaster University took place June 15-18th 2014. Apart from their arrival and departure days, the fellows spent 2 full days with MacOrtho faculty and residents.

The fellows, Pramod Achan (England), Will Aston (England), Rob Ashford (England), Brendan Coleman(New Zealand), Greg Firth (South Africa), Sanjeev Patil (Scotland) and Phong Tran (Australia), began their tour with an outstanding academic session on the morning of Monday, June 16th in the Great Hall of the University Club. In front of a packed room, the fellows presented their research that closely aligned with those of MacOrtho. In turn, the MacOrtho faculty presented research studies representing similar interests, thus generating enthusiastic and collaborative discussion. Lunch in the University Club was accompanied by further academic discussion and tableside chats with our Academic Chair, Mohit Bhandari. The afternoon was spent with subspecialty groups and further exploration of common surgical interests and research collaborations. The fellows then spent the evening with MacOrtho families at a poolside BBQ, enjoying the relaxed environment and camaraderie. The final day of the ABC MacOrtho visit took place on June 17th in the Niagara Peninsula. The fellows enjoyed wine tasting tours at Hillebrand and Peller Estates, and re-invigorated with a dousing of cool water on the Hornblower through Niagara Falls.

It was an honor and a privilege to host the ABC fellows in 2014 and we hope to continue this highly prestigious and rewarding tradition in the future.

"The group of gentlemen who visited us and shared their academic and cultural insights were truly impressive for many reasons, but most notably for their natural facility in developing a genuine convivial bond with their hosts in such a short period of time”
